KATHERINE GARRATT
Katherine Garratt was born in Toronto and is a contemporary, figurative artist. She holds an Honours BFA in Visual Art from York University in Toronto. Her artistic style is deeply shaped by her classical and contemporary art education, as well as her exposure to world mythology and 20th century Expressionism. Early classical training at Thornton Hall in Toronto involved reproducing works by Old Masters such as Rembrandt, Leonardo da Vinci, and Michelangelo, which gave her a strong technical foundation. Her studies at York University, under the guidance of Professor Hugh Leroy who encouraged intuitive and symbolic approaches inspired by Jungian archetypes, led her to develop an intuitive painting process with mythological themes.
Garratt’s solo and group exhibition history includes shows at Founders Gallery and IDA Gallery, York University, Toronto; The Federation Gallery, Granville Island, Vancouver; Artemis Gallery, North Vancouver; The Surrey Art Gallery, Surrey; The Turnbull Gallery, Surrey; and Nomad Gallery, White Rock. She is represented by Nomad Gallery which presented her 2024 solo exhibition “The Golden Age,” inspired by the worldwide myth of paradise.
Garratt's new solo exhibition, “Our Mother Earth,” draws inspiration from the global myth of the Earth Mother Goddess, who represents the earth as a divine female figure nurturing and sustaining all life. In her paintings, she envisions a paradisiacal earth where the Goddess lives among humans who have a harmonious, rather than a competitive, relationship with nature. Through intricate compositions and a vibrant palette, she invites viewers to witness hybrid human figures intertwined with birds, animals, and sea life. She hopes that her work encourages reflection on the enduring human connection to the earth; a living and breathing entity that deserves to be honoured and respected.
